As someone who has been invited on several occasions into Bay Area EA groups, my experience has been that many of the people who are involved are more concerned with some grand concept of ethics and skipped over an interest and education in simple decency. While only anecdotal, these reports are consistent with the type of environments I saw that would allow sexual assault/harassment to be more commonplace than in other social settings. Even in college fraternities, you are more likely to encounter someone with the common sense, decency, and willingness to tell guys who take things too far to cut it out. There's much more room for emotional investment and manipulation, and ensuing toxicity, within the groups described in the article. |
