What utterly horrible minds in that comment thread. The justification that other bad things happen means we can reasonably create more evil is disgusting.
Joseph Weizenbaum once said to the question (paraphrasing) "If I don't develop evil/unethical thing Z, someone else will." with: "In city X every day there is rape and if I don't do it, someone else will." Showing how stupid this line of reasoning is.
Which is a different situation than the one with developing some technology. If someone develops faceswap, and then someone else develops it too, we won't have twice the amount of faceswap-badness.
edit: which is not to say that I think "if I don't do it, someone else will" is a good argument for doing something you disagree with..
It's not just that, they also lack reading comprehension skills. The initial comment could not be more clear that this tech has practically no positive use whatsoever, yet all the snarky "guess we should ban electricity" comments bring up things that have pretty obvious positive uses
Let's run this through Hanlon's razor...no one is suggesting that we "create more evil". They're simply suggesting that this technology is not inherently evil.
Whether it is evil or not, we can debate, but let's start by assuming good faith by all debate participants.
