Only sure thing is that politicians reacting to the incident will cause more damages than 100000 more similar incidents would.

I'm especially worried about politicians putting limits on programmers, like having to have a degree to do machine learning and risking your ml license revoked.

At some point the "oops, I did not realize this could be used for harm" excuse starts to sound naive. Programmers can't keep claiming to be smart on the one hand, and constantly surprised that their work is used to make weapons on the other.
