I guess it depends a little on how many levels you have to go through to get the big picture. If it's a big company then you will find it difficult to get the big picture since you may have to go through a lot of levels.

If it is a small one then find out people who have had some part to play from the beginning and talk to them.

However if you are conscious of appearing dumb, then that's the first thing you need to solve. We are all dumb in some way. Being conscious of it prevents you from learning.
