They only supported the ASCII characters and a few sizes/colors that was pre-rendered.

My 486 was able to do arbitrary text rendering without any problem. Text rendering is not expensive by any standard today. The only reason any text editor is slow is exceptionally poor programming or bad multi-threading (which is a little more forgivable).
