Last time I was using a gas stove, it was in a rental property. The hood vented right back into the kitchen, and there was no other exhaust fan / window / whatever that was reasonably close to the (otherwise very nice, FWIW) gas stove.
Yes most rentals I've lived in and and visited have these cheap recirculating hoods that do nothing for combustion byproducts, if they have a range hood at all.
