The real need of any home server has really dissapeard now when there are cheap services for everything and all of them do it better than any setup am willing to dedicate my time on. If you really want something just buy a cheap NAS and it will run everything you want with minimal setup. Unless you want to learn how to setup a server ie "home lab", but then its more cheaper and more efficient to rent a cheap vm on linode. The era where you had an old computer from your office in a closet to host your website, music, email, and such is long gone. |

Even on the lower end a recycled mini-PC will run you like 100 bucks and get you 8 core/8 GB memory and negligible power. Versus the cheapest Linode plan at $5/mo for 1 core/1 GB. That's more competitive and might work for some people but even then self-host is still viable. Your own time is valuable of course, but most of the time in my experience is not dealing with the hardware itself, it's setting up the software and maintaining it. Which you still have to do with Linode.
