I’m comfortable thinking in public but less comfortable in personal branding oriented contexts. Remember, there are other avenues than Twitter, with different formats, social contexts and ground rules. Twitter is like the debate club or student council, with the loudest voices, and a narrow Overton window. Combining Twitter’s focus on people and their public achievements with social instincts resulted in basically becoming a social posturing platform. Same with eg LinkedIn. It is possible to operate with different values in any context, but it’s good to be aware of skews, biases and gravitational pull of the medium itself. In short, don’t be afraid of public thinking, but pick a platform that aligns with your values and goals. |
