Wouldn't be surprised if companies like Uber are promoting this type of future for the obvious reason that it will make more people dependent on their ride-sharing services.

Many decades ago, automobile manufacturing companies like General Motors paid cities to tear up their trolley systems in order to make people more dependent on the automobiles that they wanted to sell them.

I don't think uber will be relevant in a city that does not have automobiles for private transportation.
