1. don't use Kindle since it lock you to use a proprietary format made by Amazon. Use a Kobo for example
2. buy ebook in a open format like .epub
3. buy physical copies as an alternative Remember that the important thing is to support book writers and publishers in their job to bring us stories and information. Doesn't matter if you use Amazon or other stores. |

The answer should be Kindle+Calibre combo (Calibre can run even own server) and no need any internet connection in Kindle.
