This is the advice I'd give to anyone, particularly in this market: don't resign until you physically start your new job. Particularly when the new job is in a different country, even if your contract requires you to give a certain period of notice, it really doesn't matter. So in your case I would've started with Amazon in January and then resigned.

A lot now depends on what country you are in, what visa you are on and what other visa you may qualify for. You may qualify for a temporary Schengen visa. That buys 90 days at least. The country you're in may cover cases like this. You should probably speak to an immigration lawyer in that country.

There's not really anything you can do about Amazon Canada rescinding your offer. It sucks but don't waste energy on it. Just move on.

Maybe it's a higher bar to lay off a brand new employee than to rescind an offer letter. But I don't think that's a given. It still may be good advice in the current climate though.
