News sites like ft.com should be setting up their own mastodon servers, i.e. mastodon.ft.com, and creating accounts for their journalists on that server. Then there is no need for separate verification - it will right in the person's profile name, like mastodon.ft.com/@davelee.

I don’t think that’s the ultimate solution here — since journalists often work for multiple outlets —- and it’s highly unlikely every news org would take the route of making a Mastodon server of its own.
they don't even need to run Mastodon. Smart media orgs will incorporate the AP protocol in their site's content management system.
