When does a pile of sand become a heap[1]? These questions are ultimately not useful and confuse rather than clarify.

There isn't a real difference between 999 million and a billion though.
A billion sounds fine
Having a million dollars puts you in lower to mid middle class.

There does exist some cutoff and it can be haggled over where exactly it is but it is certainly below a billion.

Having a million dollars puts you in the top 12% of household net worth in the US - while "middle class" is a notoriously loose term in the US, that's upper middle class at least. Median household net worth is around $120k.
