The Yamaha HS series monitors are not anyone's standard. They're simply cheap to purchase and therefore ubiquitous today in the studios of beginner music producers.

Yamaha NS-10's (although relatively cheap) were standard because they represent the audio in a way that gives very clear signals about what needs to be addressed in the recording. They are unforgiving about how they represent your mix. If you have a bad mix they'll tell you.

HS series monitors were designed to replace the NS-10's and have the same sound. And they're the best selling monitors, have been since they were introduced to replace the NS-10's. Of course today there are many companies offering "better" monitors if you listen to Internet placement and sponsored posts, but nothing has emerged to upset their position.

Kudos on trying though, I see you guys everywhere. What brand are you hawking? Don't be coy.

You're very presumptuous. I'm not a salesman. I am a career record producer and mixer.

The Yamaha HS series are not the same speakers as the NS-10. While many working professionals will still use NS10's I have yet to see a single world-class mixer choosing to use an HS8. Even then, NS10's are not the be-all end-all of speakers. The appeal of NS10's is that they sound terrible and if your mix can translate on them then you're heading in the right direction. Professionals will still get a second opinion on far-nicer studio monitors, because NS10s will not reveal everything.

Best-selling does not equal good. HS8's are entry-level speakers. It is no surprise that an entry level product would be the best-selling. A Big Mac might be a best-selling cheeseburger, but nobody with any experience eating cheeseburgers would suggest that it's the best at anything beyond being profitable or affordably produced.

When it comes to actual quality, resolution, transient-response, lack of distortion and sonic reproduction Yamaha HS8's are nowhere near being the best studio monitors. Not even close.

There are a lot of speakers that we could debate over being excellent, but in no conversation with working professionals will HS8's ever come up and withstand scrutiny. They're poor speakers for anyone who gives a damn about making records.

They do a job and they do it for cheap, but they don't do it well.
