The other issue is that if they go all the way and lock it down it quickly becomes the situation where people have to pirate the media they just bought if they want to watch it. Then they see how much better the pirates treat them and they are discouraged from buying the actual media.

Is all of this DRM actually stopping pirates? No. Is it harming your paying customers? Yes. Not always, but often enough that it discourages people from buying the media.
