If I can fix my phone for $100 I won't buy a new one for $1000. It's clear why they oppose people fixing their own stuff. This is kind of the end state of weird tech libertarianism. Instead of thinking “let’s build cool things along with society” it’s “let’s have this whole universe controlled by us where we can remake everything to our needs”.
Of course they don’t want legislatures dictating how they do things, but this legislative push is happening due to their initial reluctance to do anything. There was an alternate universe available, but a refusal to acknowledge the existence of people who can indeed coerce rhetoric behavior leads to this kind of self own.
