Not sure that those claiming to be pursuing "Effective Altruism" have a conscience. If they did, then it seems they would not need to invoke this term to describe their actions, or in this case, their "promised" actions and stated intentions. Long before the internet, and the means to make up language and spread the most nonsensical ideas to millions of people across the globe in milliseconds, people, some of whom became wealthy, acted altruistically. One does not need wealth to practice altruism. Many people do it instinctively. To suggest or even imply that altruism not backed by wealth is insignificant or even less significant is not a novel idea, nor is it non-obvious. It is, of course, deeply cynical. We can expect such unoriginal "thinking" from those entranced by the so-called "tech" industry. |
