I was hoping it was Finnish, but I should have known it was Australian. Not sure why I thought anyone would name software after an empty field.

Kangas creator/maintainer (or, one of) here:

We named it Kangas because our research team's mascot is the kangaroo, and pandas is the name of a popular related library. Since releasing it last week, I've had multiple people ask me if it the name was Finnish--really makes me wish I'd done it intentionally :)
