The Fediverse sounds like the Federal government's even more dystopian version of the Metaverse.

(I read the article, so I know it's not actually that, and in fact is kinda neat)

I don't know if it's exactly a 1:1 concept but federated services have existed before commercial unices. this was built on top of NIS+ in Solaris: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federated_Naming_Service
