Sheesh, the software interview process is so messed up that it makes people wonder if they can actually do the job they already do.

"Huh, maybe I don't know how to program. I thought I'd been programming functioning applications professsionally all this time, but despite all evidence to the contrary, maybe not!"

The problem is with the interview process, not you. More broadly, the problem is with the industry and its incentives, not you.

If I had to put my finger on it, I'd say it's the need to scale everything, including human processes like finding new team members. Nobody doubts that spending a lot of time really getting to know a programmer's strengths and weaknesses would be better, but we'd have to sacrifice a lot of throughput in the hiring process, and god forbid we do that.
