To be fair, it was specifically introduced because of how impersonation of well known people was becoming a problem. Twitter was sued by Tony La Russa because of an impersonation and had a bunch of celebrities complaining about it. [0] That it has also taken on a status aspect does not take away from its original intent and ongoing usefulness as a verification mechanism.
