Pretty much what people told users. In the end it would get more expensive for them. Many didn't listen and now it is more expensive for everyone.
Not that I believe that software maintenance isn't real and it needs a model to be financed or that subscriptions are always a bad deal. I still am angry at the people that thought their subscription would save them money. I just dislike their naivete because it is so expensive and not only for themselves.
Same is true if you invest in closed or many cloud systems. It didn't become less work either and the knowledge investment and product dependency is significant too.
