What kind of "better"? If it's for my mom then Word any day of the week. If it's for a math student, LaTex any day of the week.

A better mom has the possibility to contribute to LaTeX having available all the sourceware. Word is cactus in a desert if there is anything you find discomforting in the thirsty user experience you can't change, sorry.
