Netflix would rather have 4 months of my money than give me a discount for a yearly subscription. Thats my beef.

It never had to come to an ad supported tier. There were moves to be made that would have prevented the ad tier but they spent money on dead ends. Just as an example, why didn't they buy MGM? It served many of their needs.

Clearly if they had followed the business advice of an arm-chair hacker news general - Everything would be perfect and they would still be profitable, right?

Perhaps a large business with many compeititors is a bit more complicated?

It must be. Because while Reed Hastings is talking about the death of linear tv, his competitors are incorporating linear options as a gateway to their streaming product.

If the large business Netflix had been paying attention to the business news instead of trying to get into the Hollywood trades, they would've seen the coming storm.
