I was thinking that I wouldn’t appreciate aliens sending crazy microbes to earth just to see what happens.

It’s weird that NASA is funding the DEEP-IN part of the project but not the microbe part. IMO you cannot separate the two.

You can separate them. You want to send probes with sensors and get the data back. Just don't send microbes.
