Well, it's just an issue of network effects now. Within a few years, enough people will have 4G smartphones that we'll be able to rely solely on VOIP-to-VOIP calls.

Until carriers block VoIP traffic, because they can Ben under the FCC net neutrality rules that they keep trying to lawsuit out of existence.

Unless there are big gains in reliability/uptime of IP versus conventional phone systems, I kinda doubt this.
