It was a reaction to SunVeiw failing in the marketplace. Sun wanted to give Gosling a new project to keep him around so they had him write Oak, a language for set-top devices. That eventually became Java. Andreesen was so jealous of the marketing money Sun was throwing at it he named his language JavaScript to get a free ride on that. |
