Fascinating! The wiki says they've only uncovered 5%. I'm very curious to see what more they'll discover!

Nothing. excavation has stopped with no plans to continue. The decision has been made to preserve the site for future generations (at the expense of this one). We literally barely scratch the surface of discovery because of a contradiction at the heart of archaeology. Preservation before excavation. Yet the list of places to excavate only ever grows. Following current trends, the rest of Gobekli Tepe will never make it out of the ground.
That's disappointing. I would imagine that many of these sites will eventually be lost to natural and man-made events. At what point can we say it's time to excavate before it's too late?
Fortunately there is ongoing excavation nearby at Karahan Tepe; it's a recently discovered even larger sister site built by the same civilization.
