Uses the D4 motif that this variant is based on? If anything, why have a coin flip to resolve the tie? Just re-roll the D4 and stay in-universe

In that case you could roll a single d4 and give one player the odd numbers and the other player the even numbers.

With the additional advantage that the original rules need 2d4, but only once, at the very beginning.
