That isn't exactly how it works -- It is a valid argument for raises, especially early in your career. But at some point, you are no longer selling your personal value to your boss - you are competing with other programmers who are willing to give the same value for a lower salary. To get past that point, you need to have specialized business knowledge so that outside programmers cannot compete with you. The trick to getting very high salaries is to decrease the pool of competitors for work, by increasing specialized knowledge above and beyond your coding skills. |
