> While it is true that unsustainable tourism has skyrocketed since Hawaii has lifted COVID-19 regulations, the effects of settler colonialism are an insidious rot that spreads throughout Hawaii’s statehood and colonization.

On the other hand, mass immigration to countries that haven't been colonized is entirely beneficial, and completely unlike what is happening to Hawaii. Because of.. uhmm... nuanced reasons.

> For years, kānaka maoli (Native Hawaiians) and non-Indigenous longtime residents have advocated limiting outside influence on the islands. [..] Hawaiian culture is deeply rooted in land stewardship. Hawaiians see the land not as property owned or sold, but as family, something newcomers often fail to recognize.

Right. Blood and soil. A uniquely Hawaiian idea.

There's real social change effected by any influx of people anywhere. People bring their money, which is actually just power, and also their values/culture with them. It's up to residents to decide for themselves whether that's good or not. The money goes a long way in some places, and so can do a lot to lift some people out of poverty. Westerners have many good values, too, however these can displace local culture, which is social corrosion, and they also have their own ways they behave badly too, which must be weighed.

At the end of the day it's up to a society to decide what happens, there are benefits and costs either way, and they need to choose profit or authenticity and purity, or neither, and just coast through life and hope everything turns out OK.

So immigration is bad in some places? Isn’t this a deeply racist right wing ideal? Or is there nuance to this? Who decides where immigration is acceptable? Isn’t Hawaii part of the US?
