That only solves a few of the possible issues a content-free burner phone solves, though. I sure wouldn't travel to those bits of the world with a regular device with all my information on it. Rubber hose cryptography is a thing.

Very true, and important to note that ‘rubber hose cryptography’ doesn’t have to mean violence—it can take the form of ‘open your phone and let us dump your data or you don’t get to enter/leave the country’.
