I think it's almost impossible to judge the speed of others unless you're consciously trying to maintain speed with the flow of traffic. If you're constantly passing people as you travel you're not doing that.

I rarely passed others and my car at the time couldn’t go above 80 so I was acutely aware when the traffic was faster than I am.

I think it’s most likely changes in I-88 since I lived there are responsible for any difference.
