I thought Apple used pentalobe screws that they own the patent to, so that they can sue anyone who makes a compatible screwdriver available to the general public.

You're likely right. I was remembering having to disassemble old iMacs (pre-2009) for a college job but they were ancient enough to be Torx instead. Not a fan of machines that require a plunger just to get the RAM out to be honest.
