I'd push back against this. I have worked for a few tech companies in pretty small midwest towns and found the culture much better than what I see and hear from FAANG experiences. I turned down an AWS position and ultimately declined to continue interviewing for an Apple position because of some management red flags.

Although I will freely admit my career and life goals are definitely not the average West Coast developer's.

Sure, I am not claiming it's only here or there. I am saying that the average HN poster is very likely to be much more privileged than many other tech workers.
