You're not alone. I'm 36 and am experiencing the same syndrome of buying power tools and wanting to become a carpenter so that I can "log out" and make something real and so that I can achieve physical tiredness from working. Switching away from software, for me, would mean a big impact on salary, and that has always kept me from learning something new to a degree that is profitable. If you want to learn to build things, you can do that; go down in time on your full-time developer job and spend time learning how to build physical things, and assess if that's something you could see yourself doing more than 50% of the time. Building real things can pay well, too. |
