It has to do with his quote about the Saudis while playing in their golf tourneys. Basically acknowledging all the bad things they are associated with and then shrugging his shoulders and taking the money.

Our government still sell them weapons without such clear condemnations, so if that statement tarnishes his reputation, what does that say about the rest of us (US citizens)?

Considering the amount of oil the US imports from Saudi Arabia[0], I think we're all maybe a little more directly tarnished than by our elected officials allowing the sales of arms.
