Reading this I think a friendly email to them will solve it. My business has plenty of customers who forget to cancel, the charge on their credit card statement and go into panic mode. We refund the last charge (it costs a small percentage to do that) and both sides are happy.

I did that. But they refuse to do so. They say that you have to pay for the entire 12 months, even though the account was cancelled by their team.
