I can go on Steam right now and find gazillions of game ideas and buy them. Buying a game for my Atari ST in the 80s was a) expensive b) hard <usually a trip to the mall>. The variety wasn't nearly what it is now. You have to differentiate between diversity and success. The market is much bigger now, and the selection broader. Within that large market there's only a few products that come to dominate. If you choose to just look at what's dominant, well, yeah, you'll get a negative opinion. But that's the thing. That stuff is popular because it appeals to the widest audience. By definition. But it doesn't do that by squeezing other things "off the shelf." |
