From what I understand, the very end goal is not to make money off of the hardware but the services that the hardware will provide. Existing OEMs are not easy to work with, especially if you're trying to get them to install your app in their car. I like to think of it like the smart phone hardware/software revolution that happened after the first iPhone came out. Tesla is like Apple and I hope Lucid will become like Android. The pre-EV era OEMs are like Nokia, Blackberry, etc...
