This feels like “in business” was omitted somewhere. If you look at things like physics, the quality of one’s ideas is paramount - nobody listens to a well-spoken, well-written crank. I know some of the bell labs people were outgoing and personable (Kernighan?) but were Ritchie or Thompson that way? And they did ok…
