Idk but for most projects that don't go down the apache foundation or GNU path funding via either support (Tidelift, consulting...) or non-oss extended versions (NGINX has NGINX+) is normal. Passion is nice but money for a sustainable livelihood has got to come from somewhere with donations often being insufficient.

Have you read the article? Because what was proposed back then is not what NGINX is doing.
