I'm not in Berlin (Vienna) but I can confirm that in the few places outside of the bigger cities where I've encountered this phenomenon, its very common to get criticized for poor German-language skills by the townspeople, who seem to think that ones German skills should be at least on par with Germans who can speak English. Old wounds, I guess. |
