Bit late to the table, Linux is already used in safety critical systems and has been for years. This LWN article [1] gives a good overview of the various approaches and some of their tradeoffs. I can provide talks from groups within major automakers talking about their own usage too, if you'd prefer. But Linux is fine given all the caveats, limitations, and system designs are done properly.
