One of the problems with the US dairy supply chain are anticompetitive practices with respect to manufacturing facilities. I’ve witnessed this.

There are a very limited number of manufacturing facilities approved to product infant formula, and only the largest of companies have the scale to work with them.

This affects product quality—illegally importing baby formula from smaller brands in Europe into the US has become incredibly popular because the perception of quality is much higher.

Does strict regulation to ensure the immediate safety of formula make sense? Yes. Does regulation that is so strict that only established multi-billion dollar businesses are the only ones who can produce it make sense? I don’t believe so and I believe that it’s bad for the country.
