A few lines later the author uses "18.3 degrees Fahrenheit", which might suggest the same thing. However, oddly the author also uses "drop to minus 11 degrees Celsius".

Regarding the story, given the difficulties in limiting "invasions" like this, what hope does a hypothetical Mars colony have?
