IME, that is a common 'reactionary' response. Often the problem has changed.

Notation has changed, adapted, expanded, contracted, and even spun off for different and new aspects of the problem.

There are some grognards out there who hate even this, and they're way too influential in traditional music education, but notation hasn't been static and unchanging all these centuries.
