"The northwest" isn't really much different than Ohio, Pennsylvania, or Tennessee, culturally speaking. You are probably thinking of big city culture, which you would see around Seattle and Portland, but then you would also see that in Columbus, OH or Atlanta, GA.

It sounds like they have a pretty solid take on good destinations as a minority, since they have experienced quite a bit that they would still see in the areas you mentioned.

By the way, people fly confederate flags in the northwest too!
