My entire company is remote (~60 people) and we have to pay a few hundred dollars per state and filing fees for having any employees in that state. We're in 15 states and the cost and time (paperwork and jankiness of their govt websites) ranges quite a lot. It sucks, but it's just the overhead of being a business. Businesses gets tons of benefits in the US and this is just the other edge of that sword. As others have noted, this could just as easily about any of the pitfalls of hiring in your same state, across states, or across countries. Hiring international folks is a whole rats nest of complexity that business owners need to be aware of. |
