I just realized today: even if I were the best AI engineer in the world (which I'm not), I'm not on a path to achieve anywhere near Andrej Karpathy's impact, and that's in part due to lack of sufficient ambition and imagination of possibilities. I clearly see a failure mode where one excels at their job but due to the small scope one's assigned and the box one confines oneself, their impact on society is limited by the company's mission.
